We are saddened to report that we are adding New Jersey’s Conover Beacon to Doomsday List of endangered American lighthouses.
Built in 1926, this tower was originally the Front Range Light of the Waackaack Range Lights. It was located at Point Comfort in Keansburg where it was often referred to as the Bayside Beacon. It was moved to its present location in 1941 where it became the front light for the Chapel Hill Range Lights.
Middletown Township became owner of the property in 2005 without any mention of the lighthouse in the deed. Apparently the State of New Jersey removed the lighthouse from the National Register nomination when it erroneously thought the tower was built in 1963 and have yet to make any change to that ruling.
The Conover Beacon is the last standing tower of its type in America and must be saved. Fortunately a few local people have started a movement to save the structure and we hope they are fruitful in their efforts.
