Photo Caption:
A great job of rescue work was done by the Coast Guard in the destroyer disaster in the bay off Sandy Hook. Some of the rescue crew are shown above. Skippered by Ensign Peter Chase, this crew, pictured while relaxing in the galley of its patrol cutter, after 20 hours of rescue operations, saved 45 men off the U.S.S. Turner. The cutter shoved off just before the destroyer sank in the heavy seas after a shattering blast. Back to the edition of: October 2001
