This Coast Guard project to improve Orient Point Lighthouse included rebuilding the destroyed boat ramp, removal of the emergency generator, removal of fuel oil, cleaning of the cisterns and modernization/solarization of the Aids to Navigation equipment. The project was undertaken to remove the light’s dependency on the submarine power cable, to remove the potential environmental and fire hazards associated with the engine generator and to improve safe access to the lighthouse. Much of what was done at the lighthouse is not generally visible or known by the public, but the lighthouse is now indeed better looking, and safer.
