These historic photographs of Nubble Lighthouse in York, Maine, being painted in April of 1962, was taken by Kenneth Jarvis (1903-1991). It shows that an undercoating was applied to the entire tower before it was painted white. Mr. Jarvis was a civilian employee who worked for the U.S. Coast Guard out of South Portland, Maine from the 1940s until he retired in 1963. During that time, he took many photos of Maine’s lighthouses.
The 1879 Nubble Light, also known as the Cape Neddick Lighthouse, is one of Maine’s most viewed and photographed lighthouses. It is valuable to save photos like these because they offer an interpretative memory of the history of the lighthouse for future generations. (Wayne Jarvis collection, Lighthouse Digest archives.
