Damage to stairs and railings has caused South Carolina State Park officials to close the 1875 Hunting Island Lighthouse.
A recent inspection revealed signs of stress on the lighthouse stairs and railing around the walkway. This is not the first time that the lighthouse has been closed to the public.
Back in 2003, the lighthouse was closed when cracks were discovered in some of the 167 steps to the top of the tower. After repairs were made, the tower was again opened to the public. Later, tours were limited to six people at a time.
In 2019, park officials said that the lighthouse would need $3 million in repairs and would likely have to be totally dissembled and then reassembled on site.
