Stannard Rock Lighthouse as it appeared with ice ...

When it was discovered that harsh winter storms had blown out a window in the lantern of Michigan’s remote 1882 Stannard Rock Lighthouse in Lake Superior, the Coast Guard sprang into action to prevent the possibility of the light becoming inoperable. An immediate fix was needed because the light marks a large submerged reef in an essential Great Lakes shipping lane.

The resulting action was to dispatch a Coast Guard helicopter from Air Station Traverse City with a crew from the Aids to Navigation Team Duluth to be hoisted, with their gear, down to the ice-covered Stannard Rock Lighthouse to board up the broken lantern window until it can be replaced at a later date. We salute the efforts of the Coast Guard personnel who participated in this project. They are to be commended for a job well done.
