The $2 million restoration of Cape Cod Massachusetts’s Highland Lighthouse is underway, thanks to the efforts of the National Park Service.
The National Park Service is repairing the corroded metal, repointing the tower’s peak, replacing the current ventilation system and performing numerous other projects.
The first Highland Lighthouse tower was a wooden structure built in 1797 and was replaced in 1831 by a brick tower, which in turn was replaced in 1857 by the current structure. In 1996, the lighthouse was moved 450 feet back from the eroding shoreline.
