Two lighthouse keepers who served at Maine’s West Quoddy Head Lighthouse were honored by Lighthouse Digest this past August 6th with the placement of United States Lighthouse Service Memorial Plaques at their tombstones at the Bayview Cemetery in Lubec, Maine.
The two keepers honored were George A. Case, Sr., who was the head keeper at West Quoddy Head Lighthouse from 1861 to 1877 and Lowell G. Chase who was an assistant lighthouse keeper at West Quoddy Head Lighthouse from 1867 to 1878.
Participating in the placement of the markers were: Timothy Harrison, editor of Lighthouse Digest; Kathleen Finnegan, managing editor of Lighthouse Digest; Kimberly Ashby, Executive Director of the West Quoddy Light Keepers Association; and Loring Munson, of the Lubec Historical Society. The markers were donated by Lighthouse Digest.
Additionally, a Veterans Marker was placed by Loring Munson of the Lubec Historical Society at the grave of George A. Case.
It is hoped that a more formal ceremony can be held after the COVID-19 pandemic has passed.
