As the Cameron Preservation works to stabilize Louisiana’s extremely endangered 1856 Sabine Pass Lighthouse, it was symbolically relighted for one weekend this past December with an LED light to show pride in the fact that work has begun. It was the first time in 67 years that a light has shone from its lantern.
Raising money to save the remote lighthouse has not been an easy task. In fact, fund raising to save the lighthouse started back in 2000, and still has a long way to go. The current work will include repairing the masonry floors as well as the brick and mortar of the 87-foot-tall tower. To help stabilize the structure, stainless steel bands are being put around the top of the tower and windows are being installed to help keep out the elements. (Photos by Andrew Tingler.)
