For the first time since 1995, Maine’s 1879 Cape Neddick Light Station, better known as Nubble Light, has undergone a major facelift this past spring and early summer.

The approximate $200,000 project was done by the JB Leslie Company of Berwick, Maine, which, over the years, has worked on number of other lighthouse restoration projects along the New England coast.

No taxpayer money was used for the work on the lighthouse, which has been owned by the town of York, Maine since 1998. All money came from proceeds of the gift shop that is operated by the town in Sohier Park by the lighthouse. The gift shop was founded many years ago by the late Verna Rundlett, who was a steadfast volunteer in the community.

Nubble Lighthouse is believed to be the most viewed lighthouse in New England and it is probably tied with Portland Head Lighthouse in Cape Elizabeth, Maine as the most photographed lighthouse in New England, and perhaps the United States.
