The memory of two notable lighthouse keepers were honored this past September 30th when the Friends of Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouses (FPHL), a chapter of the American Lighthouse Foundation (ALF), placed memorial U.S. Lighthouse Service light keeper markers at the grave sites of lighthouse keepers Leander White and Henry M. Cuskley.
The solemn ceremony, held at the Calvary Cemetery in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, was attended by representatives of FPHL and ALF as well as family members of the lighthouse keepers.
Jeremy D’Entremont, chairman of FPHL who served as MC for the event, said, “The lighthouses themselves are historic and beautiful, but it was the keepers and their families who brought them to life.”
From this day forward, people who walk through the cemetery will now know by the placement of the U.S. Lighthouse Service markers that these men served their nation with distinction, dedication, and pride.
