Harbor of Refuge Dock Dedicated

Looking up at the Harbor of Refuge Lighthouse. ...

On Saturday, June 17th, the Delaware River and Bay Lighthouse Foundation (DRBLHF) dedicated in formal fashion its new dock at the Harbor of Refuge Lighthouse. There were 32 invited guests and board members of the foundation on hand to celebrate the occasion.

Looking down at the new dock at Harbor of Refuge ...

For more than 15 years, the docking system at Harbor of Refuge Lighthouse has been the Achilles Heel of this project. From 2002-2009, the dock was rebuilt 13 times. Finally, after back to back Nor’easters in November of 2009, the organization decided it was time to work on a fund raising campaign to rebuild a totally new dock, which was a good thing, because in 2012 Hurricane Sandy put the finishing touches on the docking system that was still in place.

In 2013, the DRBLHF applied for a grant-in-aid for Delaware historical properties and was awarded almost the entire amount to rebuild the dock at the Harbor of Refuge Lighthouse.

Finally, after seven years of inactivity at the lighthouse, the Delaware River and Bay Lighthouse Foundation is now able to resume its restoration efforts. They are to be congratulated for their tenacity.
