As part of the Coast Guard’s ongoing modernization and cost saving programs, the revolving VEGA beacon in the Borden Flats Lighthouse at the mouth of the Taunton River in Mount Hope Bay in Fall River, Massachusetts has been removed and replaced with a new LED beacon.
Borden Flats is not the only lighthouse at which this has happened, at and it will continue to happen at additional lighthouses. But, sadly, the romance of the revolving beacon is now lost and gone forever.
Built in 1881 and automated in 1963, the Borden Flats Lighthouse is now privately owned by Nick Korstad who has done an amazing job of restoring the lighthouse and making it available for overnight stays to the general public. Nick Korstad says that the day may come when he starts some fund-raising to possibly install a replica Fresnel lens in the tower. (Photos courtesy Nick Korstad.)
