Late this past summer, descendants of lighthouse keeper John H. Paul visited the lighthouses where he was the lighthouse keeper from 1912 to 1927. John Paul’s granddaughter, 81-year-old Ann Calcutt, is the last living person to have contact with John Paul, who passed away in 1953.
Legend has it that the Borden Flat’s Lighthouse is graced with the spirit of John Paul, who was the recipient of the bronze Carnegie Lifesaving Medal for a rescue that took place at the lighthouse.
The 1881 Borden Flats Lighthouse is located in Mount Hope Bay at the mouth of the Taunton River in Fall River, Massachusetts. In 2010, under the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act, the Borden Flats Lighthouse was purchased at auction by Nick Korstad, who has meticulously restored the lighthouse where he now offers over-night stays.
