This past April, in spite of several weather related delays, North Carolina’s iconic 1859 Cape Lookout Lighthouse was painted. The Cape Lookout Lighthouse is the only such structure in the United States to bear the checkered daymark, intended not only for use as a daymark from sea, but also to show direction. The center of the black diamonds points in a north-south direction, while the center of the white diamonds points east-west
This was the first time the lighthouse had been painted since 2004 and the existing exterior paint had begun to show its age and damage to the 169-foot tall tower caused by three hurricanes and other weather elements.
