Just because a structure looks like a lighthouse, it may not always be a lighthouse. It was believed for some time that this vintage post card of the harbor in Skikda (Phillippeville) in eastern Algeria showed a lighthouse. Finding in-depth historical information about many lighthouses or other historic structures in some parts of the world is close to impossible, even in these days of Internet. However, after some extensive researching, Michel Forand discovered that this vintage post card in his collection was not a lighthouse, but was a lighthouse facsimile that was used as a health inspection office for cargo, animals, and perhaps passengers. Algeria has a number of magnificent and beautiful lighthouses, and although photos of them can be found in the Internet, very little information can be found about the lighthouse keepers who served at them or their stories and memories.
