Shown here on the warehouse floor in 1881 at Chance Brothers in England is the lantern room for the new Macquarie Lighthouse before it was shipped to Australia. Construction of the new Macquarie Lighthouse was started in 1881 and completed in 1883. The first order lens for the lighthouse was also manufactured at Chance Brothers. The Macquarie Lighthouse, also known as the South Head Upper Lighthouse, is the oldest aid to navigation site in Australia, dating back to 1791. The 1881-83 lighthouse was built to replace an earlier lighthouse that was constructed from 1816 to 1818.
