Maryland’s Piney Point Lighthouse on the Potomac River has undergone a major restoration thanks to funding from the Maryland Heritage Area Authority and the Board of County Commissioners for St. Mary’s County.
Because of its close proximity to Washington, D.C., the 1836 lighthouse has been visited by a number of the Presidents of the United States, including Theodore Roosevelt, Millard Fillmore, Franklin Pierce, and James Monroe.
The fog bell tower that once stood next to the lighthouse was destroyed on October 15, 1954 by Hurricane Hazel. The Piney Point Lighthouse is one of the lighthouses included in the Maryland Lighthouse Challenge. (Restoration photos by Alfred King III.)
