The volunteers of Mississippi’s Round Island Lighthouse Preservation Society know what tenacity is all about. It’s been close to 15 years since the Round Island Lighthouse was reduced to a pile of rubble in 1998 by Hurricane Georges. Only the base of the historic 1859 lighthouse was left intact.
Since then, the base of the lighthouse has been moved by barge and truck to its new location and the 6,000 pound lantern room has been rebuilt, using more than half of the material of the original. And now the lighthouse is rising from the depths of destruction to stand tall and proud again.
Amazingly, but not without precedent, the lighthouse has been rebuilt using many of the bricks from the original structure. Additionally, the lighthouse is being reconstructed to withstand 150-mph hour winds. This is being accomplished with specially made bricks in the oblong shape of the originals, installed on the interior of the lighthouse next to the originals.
But, they still need money to complete the project. They have worked for 15 long years and it is hoped that people will come forward with donations to help them complete the project.
