After being heavily damaged by Hurricane Katrina and then finished off by Hurricane Rita in 2005, the reconstruction of the New Canal Lighthouse in New Orleans, Louisiana has finally started. The building of the lighthouse will include some material from the original lighthouse. The rebuilt new lighthouse will stand nearly 20 feet taller than the previous structure to help it better withstand future hurricanes.
The 1901 New Canal Lighthouse was located on shore on Lake Ponchartrain in New Orleans, Louisiana, and had been refurbished in 1976 by the Coast Guard.
Nearly $700,000 has been raised for the project, but they still need to raise an additional $250,000 to fully complete it. They are still selling personalized commemorative bricks for $200 or donations can be made on-line at www.SaveOurLake.com.
