The photo shown here was taken by Staff Sergeant Thomas Cloonan in September or October of 1945 from a troop ship returning from Europe at the conclusion of World War II as it sailed past Deer Island Lighthouse in Boston Harbor near Winthrop, Massachusetts. We wonder how many troop ships sailed past the lighthouse and we can only surmise what was going through the minds of the brave military personnel as they returned home from the war.
Just like many of those who served in World War II have passed on, so has the Deer Island Lighthouse, which was sadly torn down in 1982.
The photograph was taken using a Zeiss IKON (German) 620 film camera.
Images like this are of great historical importance to the history of the nation and in recalling the sacrifices made by so many. (Photograph courtesy of Stephen Cloonan.)
