Save the Light, Inc, has been working hard for years to save Charleston, South Carolina’s iconic Morris Island Lighthouse. Now, they are again seeing the fruits of their labors.
This phase of saving the lighthouse, costing $2 million, consists of the replacement of sixty-eight micro pilings that will be installed under the foundation to support the 4,000 pound structure. The old pilings, eaten away by worms, are dangerously close to failing, which would cause the lighthouse to either lean dramatically and then most likely collapse.
Although the group will have saved the lighthouse from collapse, they still will need to raise more money to restore the structure, which was abandoned by the government in 1962.
