The Monarch Island Lighthouse on Shillay, Western Isles, Scotland, which had been dark since 1942, has now been relit as an active aid to navigation.
It had been replaced by a modern optic nearby, however complaints and suggestions from mariners convinced the Northern Lighthouse Board to place a beacon back in the tower. Since the beacon had been abandoned for so many years it took lighthouse officials several years to rehabilitate the tower.
