On Wolf Rock Lighthouse, a dreary eight miles off Land's End, England, three lighthouse keepers were stormbound in January 1948 for 33 cold winter days. They sent letters back to the mainland by arching a rocket into the air from the lighthouse base, shooting a line to a relief boat as shown.
Finally, on February 16 of that year, as shown in these dramatic photographs that appeared in the March 1948 issue of Life magazine,
a boat was able to get close enough to take them off the island.
