The Lake Maurepas Society expects to get a lease this month from the Coast Guard for the Pass Manchac Lighthouse. A video about the lighthouse, which has aired several times on local television has drawn lots of attention to the old structure.
Plans to save the lighthouse are in two steps; the first being to stabilize it by "packaging" it with staves and bands. Pilings will be jetted in around the lighthouse. The tops of the pilings will be joined to the lighthouse to brace it and rip rap will be placed at the base. The second phase will be to jack the lighthouse up and place it on a new foundation. Total estimated cost for the work will be around $150,000.
