One of Atlantic City, New Jersey’s oldest landmark replicas has finally got a much needed clean up and repair.
The lighthouse, which was built by the Black Horse Pike in 1954, has virtually been neglected since then. Thanks in part to
complaints by locals and tourists alike workers have now filled in the holes in the deteriorating tower, put on a rubberized coating to keep out moisture and slow down deterioration. Workers also cleared out years of debris and overgrowth to install new landscaping and then put a ceremonial light in the tower.
What amazes this magazine is why it took officials so long to do something about this landmark. Sure, it’s only a replica of the famous Absecon Lighthouse, but it’s still a historic landmark for the city. If it had not been for a group of private citizens who started the fundraising and pushed for local funds, the lighthouse replica would never have been saved.
