On Saturday, last December 7th, after 122 years of darkness, the Yaquina Bay Lighthouse was re-lit. The lighthouse became an official U.S. Coast Guard privately maintained aid to navigation displaying a fixed white light visible for six miles.
Amid a fierce Pacific storm, well known lighthouse author and historian Jim Gibbs (with Santa looking on) threw the ceremonial switch and the lighthouse was officially lit. Present at the ceremony were numerous Coast Guard dignitaries, volunteers and visitors.
A modern optic, on loan from Mr. Gibbs, is currently being used by the Friends Group which is continuing its search for a classical 5th order lens. Anyone having information on the whereabouts of a 5th order lens that is available for loan or ownership is encouraged to contact Mark Chambers, Director, Friends of Yaquina Lighthouses, P.O. Box 410, Newport, Oregon 97365 or call 541-265-5679.
