This photo shows Keeper George Matthews and his wife around 1900. Matthews was the first keeper at Maine’s Squirrel Point Lighthouse, serving there from 1898 to 1912. He had previously been an assistant keeper at Whitehead Lighthouse in Maine.
The other photo shows Mike Wright (right) of Rhode Island, with his uncle, Marion Austin. Marion, the grandson of Keeper Matthews, was born at the Squirrel Point Light Station on the Kennebec River. This photo was taken on Marion’s 90th birthday, and as you can see he’s holding framed photos of Squirrel Point Light that were presented to him by Mike.
We’re looking for more information on the history of Squirrel Point Lighthouse and Keeper Matthews. This is one of Maine’s prettiest light stations but historical information seems to be scarce.
