Photo Caption:
The lighthouse keeper at Florida’s Carysfort Reef Lighthouse literally had to climb down an open ladder to reach the privy, which sat on a totally exposed platform under the tower. This must have been quite an experience during storm that could easily produce high winds and sweep waves over the base of the tower. Built in 1852, the lighthouse still stands, but the outhouse is long gone. Back to the edition of: November 2008
