In 1873 James Davenport became the first keeper of the Little Sable Point Lighthouse near Mears, Michigan. After automation the keeper's house was destroyed and lost in the pages of time, Thanks to the efforts of the Big Sable Point Lighthouse Keepers Association the tower is now again being cared for and is open to the public in the summer season every Friday through Monday from 10 am to 6 pm.
