The Coast Guard keepers of Holland Island Bar Lighthouse were scared to death when Air Force planes mistakenly dropped practice bombs on the structure in 1957. Fortunately, none of the Coastguardsmen were injured. The lighthouse shown here from this vintage Coast Guard image was demolished in 1960. A modern light on a small erector style pole was then mounted at the site. Back to the edition of: October 2007
