In December of 1998, a group of volunteers, led by lighthouse historian and preservationist Rip Irwin, brought plywood to the island (at their own expense) to board up the abandoned keeper’s house in an effort to protect them from vandalism and the elements. However, before long, vandals removed the boards and stripped the interiors.
