Baily Lighthouse, the last manned station in Ireland was automated in March of 1997. A beacon, fueled by coal, was first established at this site as early as 1667. The first actual tower was built here in 1790 high up on a hill overlooking the present lighthouse. Because of the position high on the hill, the lighthouse was often shrouded in clouds and was eventually replaced by the current tower, pictured here, in 1814. The lighthouse is officially known as Howth Baily, but over the years has been called simply The Baily Lighthouse.
