Shown at the base of the tower and standing in the close up photo are Clarence Chape and Mary Brown, with some friends, on a weekend outing from Bayfield to the lighthouse. The two of them later married.
In the 1970’s Pete Jones, who sent us these photos, was officer in charge of the six-man Bayfield Wisconsin Coast Guard Station. While in Bayfield he met Diane Chape, granddaughter of Clarence Chape and Mary Brown Chape. And they eventually married. And so, Devils Island Light has a very small, but somewhat continuous thread though their family history.
