Catherine “Kate” Walker was appointed keeper of New York’s Robbins Reef Lighthouse by President Benjamin Harrison upon the death of her husband John in 1886. During the 30 years she was keeper at this remote lighthouse she was credited for rescuing 50 people. While maintaining the light in an exemplary manner she even found time to row her children the mile and half to shore and back each day for school. Photo from the Lighthouse Digest Archives.
