The Poltalloch was beached at Willapa Bay near the lighthouse in December of 1900. Local businesses felt that shipping and commerce would grow if Shoalwater Bay and its port had a more attractive name than the one that John Meares had bestowed upon it in 1788 as a warning to mariners of what he deemed was a treacherous shallow approach. Unfortunately, the Poltalloch found the original name to be all too true and it was seven months before it could be refloated off the shoal.
