Photo Caption:

In the early mid-1900s artist Andrew Winter took this photo of Maine’s Manana Island fog signal station, which shows the 1855 fog bell and the fog signal trumpet tower. Unfortunately, we don’t know if he ever made a painting from this image. In 1965, the Coast Guard declared the bell as excess property, but it wasn’t until 1972 that the bell was moved from the island to nearby Monhegan Island where it now sits on display near the Monhegan Lighthouse.
