Major General Benjamin Butler (1818-1893), was on Ship Island, Mississippi, in 1862, using Fort Massachusetts as a staging area for the 20,000 Union troops under his leadership to recapture New Orleans, Louisiana, from the Confederates. He later became the governor of Massachusetts for a year in 1883. Daniel McCall selected the location of Butler’s former headquarters on Ship Island as the location for the second lighthouse tower, and also treasured the gift Butler had made him of his writing desk.
