Maine’s desolate Mt. Desert Rock Lighthouse sits on an outcropping at the entrance to Frenchmens Bay about 20 miles south of Mt. Desert Island. It was established in 1830 and the current tower dates from 1847. It was automated and its keepers were removed in 1977. (Lighthouse Digest archives.)
