Civil War veteran Charles Leroy Babson was the keeper of Pumpkin Island Lighthouse from 1870 to 1902. He retired to the community of Sargentville. The day of his wife’s funeral, he locked up the door of their home and never returned. He remained the rest of his life living with his youngest son. He died on November 17, 1922.
