Portland Head Lighthouse assistant keeper Robert Thayer Sterling (l) and head keeper Frank Hilt. Sterling became the last civilian U.S. Lighthouse Service keeper at Portland Head Light when he succeeded Hilt as head keeper in 1944 until his retirement in 1946. It was the success of Frank Hilts letters, read on the air on radio station WEEL, which was one of the reasons that convinced Robert Sterling to write a book about Maine’s lighthouses.
