During the Civil War era, fortifications were placed at Cape Disappointment Lighthouse to guard the entrance to the Columbia River. Notice the keeper or soldier on the lower lantern deck looking through the telescope. The 1st order Fresnel lens can be clearly seen through the glass panes of the lantern.
