It was very difficult to keep the light bright and constant at the 1876 Calcasieu Lighthouse due to the heavy insect population that caused havoc with the lamps. In 1940, when a channel had to be cut through the marsh to St. Charles that was in a direct line with the lighthouse, the tower was dismantled and the foundation blasted out. The light was replaced by small beacons in the new channel thereafter. Back to the edition of: May/Jun 2019
