Ship Shoal Lighthouse, built in 1860 and still standing, has an interesting history of strife: political conflicts during the civil war, medical struggles with keepers suffering from lead poisoning, weather turmoil due to multiple hurricanes, and even a physical skirmish that almost resulted in murder. It was automated in 1929 and decommissioned in 1965. Current plans are to preserve it by moving it ashore to Berwick. Back to the edition of: May/Jun 2019
