The Ocean Liners
The Los Angeles Harbor Lighthouse was viewed by tens of thousands of people on the coastal passenger ships and ocean liners that passed by. Shown here is the 407-foot long SS Yale, a 3,731-gross ton turbine liner as she sailed past the lighthouse in 1913. During World War I, she became the USS Yale and made 31 round trips transporting troops to France. She was again called into service during World War II and the U.S. Navy then renamed her USS Greyhound. In June of 1948, the vessel was sold for scrap. (National Archives photo.)
