In this 1871 photo by Eadweard Muybridge, four visitors are seen at the Cape Blanco Lghthouse. It was a popular tourist destination and the keepers and their families were expected to be hospitable to guests and give them tours of the grounds. For 20 years, from 1896-1916, there were over 4000 guests who came to comb the beaches, camp overnight, and see the lighthouse. (U.S. Coast Guard photo, Cape Blanco Heritage Society.)
