In 1912 Secretary of War Henry L. Stimson ordered that Point Adams Lighthouse be burned to the ground. Henry L. Stimson served as the Secretary of War under President Howard Taft from 1911 to 1913, and again as Secretary of War under Presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt and Harry S. Truman, from 1940 to 1945. The National Security Act of 1947 abolished the position of Secretary of War when it created the positions of Secretary of the Army, Secretary of the Air Force, and Secretary of the Navy, who would all report to the newly created position of Secretary of Defense.
