The awards themselves are rare with ALF having only given out a few of them since its inception in 1994. The awards were given to them for their “continuing dedication in saving American lighthouse history and heritage.”

Over the years, the Roberts have been responsible for authoring numerous lighthouse books, doing extensive research to document and save much of our nation’s lighthouse history before it was lost forever, and their founding of the Outer Banks Lighthouse Society which is one of the foremost lighthouse preservation groups in the country.

The Roberts were also instrumental in the battle to save and relocate the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse to its new location. As well as working toward the restoration of North Carolina’s Bodie Island Lighthouse, the Roberts are busy working on the Hatteras Homecoming Event planned for later this year in which descendants of the Cape Hatteras lighthouse keepers from all over the world are expected to attend.
