Stepping Stones Lighthouse Decays While Awaiting Restoration

In 2014, a public/private partnership was formed, to save the 1877 Stepping Stones Lighthouse in New York States Western Long Island Sound, but little has been done since then to save the historic structure that is a twin to the 1874 Hudson-Athens Lighthouse near Hudson City, New York.

As can be seen from these photos, the trim-work is falling off, vegetation is growing on the structure and infiltrating the walls, the ventilator ball is tilting, the door is open and off its hinges allowing for wildlife and the elements to penetrate the structure, the fence is down and broken, bricks are literally falling off the structure and laying at its foundation and there is rust and peeling paint everywhere. It may take millions to restore it.

In 2017, the Town of North Hempstead, New York, hired a firm to work on restoration and build a dock, but their work was reportedly delayed by the Pandemic. Because the dock is currently unfinished, there is not even a way to access the lighthouse to work on its restoration.
