Public officials on Nantucket Island, Massachusetts, state that the 60-foot-tall Great Point Lighthouse is in danger of collapse. They are worried that structural cracks in the tower could soon cause the tower to crumble like its predecessor did in a storm on March 29, 1984.
When the 1818 tower collapsed, federal funds were secured to build a replacement tower that was dedicated by Senator Ted Kennedy on September 7, 1986.
But without the support of someone like the late Senator, where will the funds come from? Time will tell.
